Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design and development of fiber optic connectivity and cable management products for data center applications, with a primary focus on fiber distribution cabinets, enclosures, panels, and related mechanical components.
This position will drive mechanical product development in the U.S. and work closely with engineering teams in Japan to bring products from concept and detailed design through prototyping, evaluation, design improvement, and mass production.
Key Responsibilities
1. Mechanical Design and Development
- Design and develop fiber optic cabinets, enclosures, panels, and related mechanical components.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, assemblies, and engineering documentation.
- Develop mechanical designs considering functionality, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and ease of assembly.
- Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes for metal and plastic/resin components.
- Perform tolerance analysis and design reviews to ensure product performance and manufacturability.
2. Prototype and Product Evaluation
- Drive prototype development in collaboration with team in Japan.
- Evaluate prototypes for mechanical performance, fit, function, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Identify design issues and implement necessary design improvements.
- Develop and execute mechanical verification and validation activities.
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of mechanical issues.
3. Manufacturing and Production Support
- Coordinate with engineering teams in Japan on design requirements, technical issues, and product development activities.
- Review manufacturing capabilities, tooling, processes, and production requirements.
- Resolve design and manufacturing issues during prototype and production stages.
- Support design transfer, manufacturing readiness, and production ramp-up to ensure stable mass production.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD for mechanical product design.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including materials, tolerances, mechanical structures, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience creating 3D models, detailed 2D drawings, assemblies, and manufacturing documentation.
- Experience with prototype development, mechanical evaluation, and design verification.
- Ability to independently identify and solve mechanical design and manufacturing issues.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with global engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of mechanical design engineering experience in product development.
- Experience taking mechanical products from concept through prototype, qualification, and mass production.
- Experience designing sheet metal, machined, die-cast, and plastic injection-molded components.
- Knowledge of fiber optic connectivity and cable management products, particularly cabinets, enclosures, and panels.
- Experience with products for data center, telecommunications, or optical communications applications.
- Experience with DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and cost optimization.
- Japanese language skills are preferred for collaboration with engineering teams in Japan.
